2nd Cut Feedback

After our second deadline arrived we got feedback from out teacher, this was both good and bad, it was good because it says what we did well and bad for the parts that we need to improve, if we do improve parts that were poor we hop that we can increase the grade we will get.

The parts that we need to improve are:

The first dissolve doesnt work well, we will improve this by either using other shots or by experimenting with it.

The zoom on the stairs at the train station doesnt work and will be fixed by either re-shooting at the same station or somewhere easier to access.

The handheld shot is too long to work well, we will improve this by shortening it to the parts that are necesary

The 360 isnt great, we hope to improve this with a change of tactics, the problem we have it the space around the table in which we need to film this means 2 people need to take it in turn to turn the camera.

We need to add more flashbacks to emphasise the financial position that the main character is in, we will do that by filming a range of flashbacks that we can cut to in the video, some ideas that we were given were to have a final notice through the post.

If we make the changes we feel that we can possibly be getting a B grade for our production. However to do this we will need to put in the work.

Filming 29-30/11/11

We filmed again today as well as yesterday, this was because we needed to improve certain shots, one of these shots we to do with the split screen that we have, this was because we needed to zoom in on the face of the people more. Another shots that we needed to re-do was the entering to the building, this was because when we did it the first time it was too dark.

We will edit what we have filmed in the lesson next Tuesday.

First Cut + Feedback

The feedback that we got from Mrs Allison was a lot of what we already knew, such as the shots on the train are unsteady, therefore we will have to re-film them, also the lip syncing on that scene isn't very effective.

A piece of feedback that we didn't already know was we needed more dramatic shots when certain parts of the song come in, such as at the start when the guitar comes in we have an over the shoulder shot, this could be a lot more interesting/dramatic.

We also need to show more skills and techniques with our filming as a lot of what we have doesn't portray a meaning. This is because the skills that we have used aren't hugely different from the work that we did at AS.

The specific points that we needed to improve are;
  • The last shot, this is because the video ends in a fairly boring way.
  • Needs to improve lip syncing, this is because George who is the actor, was a little unsure on the words and didn't use his mouth the emphasise the words, he also forgot to say the name of the song on the train.
  • And we need to build the back story up a bit more as it is weak and doesn't give much information on what's happening and what background the man comes from.

Schedule

Our new schedule is very simple, we will film on a Monday, bring the camera to Tuesday and edit what we had filmed. We also have any other free lessons or weekends that we can book the camera for.

First Cut

Monday, 7 November 2011

Filming

Today we did some more filming so that we can edit it in tomorrows lesson, we met up after 4th period and went looking for an area to film in, the stuff that we have filmed we intend to use match on action to get it to work nicely and to make the shot more exciting. There was a problem that we had as we tried to use match on action with lip syncing, however I am confident that we can get this to work successfully.

Editing Again

Today we were doing some more editing before the first cut deadline, it is just me and George doing the editing as Laurence was unable to make it for some reason. we put all that we had filmed into the video, however we know what our problems are and what we will need to correct for the final cut. the extra bits that we filmed were added, however this caused a problem as we didnt know where to add them in.

27/10/2011

Me and George have come in on Thursday to do some more editing, we have tried to get hold of Laurence but we couldn't. we have uploaded the parts that we filmed the day before, this will help the back story behind the music video.

Filming

Me and George decided to do some more filming to add more to the story in the music video, we tried to inform Laurence, however this didn't work, what we filmed helped show the struggles that the man is going through, it shows him counting pennies, searching through nearly empty cupboards and receiving a letter through the post.

Editing 13/10/2011

Today we started to edit all that we had filmed, we went through all of our clips and decided what ones we will keep. This helped a lot as we could estimate how long the total video would be, it also let us realise if we needed to film anything extra. We will have to find out what will happen on Tuesday.

Cheshunt Filming

Today we met up at Cheshunt train station and cuickly decided the order in which we filmed the shots, these shots were of George lip synching and other shots of George walking on and off of the train as well as around the town. We had trouble filming on the train, this was because the train was not very stable and the camera was very shaky, we also had a problem with other people on the train getting in the way. As a whole the day was very productive as we got the film nearly everything that we needed.

Ideas for Saturday filming

Today we planned for what we will film on saturday, we are going to go to Cheshunt and other places around it to find areas to film, this is so we can get the shots of the person lip synching and shots of the person walking to the poker scene. We needed to get some shots of lip synching, this is important as alot of time is spent focusing on the poker scene and we havent put any lip synching in that scene. We also realised what we had filmed wasnt very good as we had a lot of long and boring shots.

Editing Poker Scene

Today when we got to school we went to edit what we had filmed and realised that we had very boring shots, we then decided that will re-film, during this lesson we also did other things, for example Laurence made a call sheet, George upload what we had filmed and was deciding what shots were good and what were bad.

Poker Scene Location + Props

This is the entrance to Whitehill Golf Club, this is where we filmed our poker scene, this is because our friends stepdad owns the club and said we could use it to film.

This is the upstairs of the club room, this is where the snooker tables are, aswell as the poker table.

These are the poker chips that we used in the filming.

This is the poker table and its surroundings.

Animatic

Filming

We got do film the poker scene that will be in our music video, this was all done at Whitehill Golf Club, and featured George and Laurence, along with two friends; Charlie and Matteo. I filmed the shots needed and made sure that we didnt repeat the problem we had with the Knebworth filming in not having enough shots. While we were there we took still images of the place.

Filming Problems

We had planned to do some filming over the weekend, however after last week we seemed to have a similar problem, this was down to us not being able to film after we had been told that we couldnt gain access to where we needed to film, However we have re-aranged and will now do some filming on the 4th October.

Location Planning

We planned to travel to London to take photos of the locations we will be using in or music video, however when we arrived at the train station, we found out the trains had been delayed and eventually suspended, this left us with a big porblem which we still need to fix.

Knebworth Filming

At Knebworth our brief was to film shots for a summer music video, therefore we needed a song, which was deemed summery; we chose to do Sunny Afternoon by The Kinks. I worked with George Blackwell and Laurence Kingdon. We had a fairly short timescale to work in, considering we needed to get every shot for the music video in 2 hours. Before we left the school we had prepared what we were going to do whilst there, we practiced a range of different filming techniques, such as changing focus, whip pan, shots that can be reversed and a 360° shot, as well as practicing fast and slow zooms and walking towards the camera. We also filmed lip synching in front of a green screen so we could learn how to use it in editing.

Whilst filming we had many shots that worked and many that didn’t, of those that didn’t we had one of the first shots we had taken, this was because Laurence didn’t lip synch a word, however we didn’t notice this until we came to editing, however a shot that did work was opening shot of the music video, this is because we successfully used a zoom and lip synching successful as well, it also sets the scene of where we were filming.

In the post production we found out we didn’t have all of the shots that we thought we had taken, and some of the ones we did have didn’t work, however we fixed this by going a filming in the first part of the lesson we had, this worked as all we needed was grass and hedges. During editing we also noticed that we had a lot of black spaces in between shots, to fix this we had to cut shots we already had and then slow them down so that they fill up the empty space, the problem with doing this a lot was the shots that lasted long were boring, therefore we added some special effects so that the viewer didn’t get bored, in the end we split the shot into 4 parts and changed the colours on them, through doing this I have learnt more skills and now know what I can do if the problem comes up again.

Overall I feel that this exercise has prepared me to some extent for A2, it has helped me realise what will work well and what wont. In the end I felt that although our music video worked it was still a bit messy and could be a lot better. Even though this didn’t turn out too great, I still wouldn’t be put off doing a music video for my A2 production.

Music

The music that we chose was a dramatic piece, this was very hard to find as we needed one to get the right feel, the song we had built up slow, the song also plays throughout most of the opening but stops in the parts in which you need to hear what is being said. We got the music from a website that boasts copyright free songs, this meant we had access to a database of songs eventhough we needed a precise type of song for our opening.

Locations

We had to choose suitable locations for us to shoot, this is to make it feel as though we were actually in places, this is because we had a scene in a "doctors office", and as we were in our school we needed to dress the set to make it look real.
This is the location where we filmed the autograph scene, this is becuase it has a different look to the rest of the school.

This is the location of all of our football shots as it gives the right impresion as football should be played on a football pitch.

This room was our doctors office, we made it look more like a doctors office by putting up posters, which were the sort that you would see.

We shot a flashback in this location, this was because we need to film someone struggling to walk up some steps.

This s the outside of the doctors office, you see this briefly before you go into the doctors office.

Animatic

This is the animatic to our film opening it has the timing that we wanted for each shot.
